Which Chanel bag should you buy?
Buying a CHANEL bag today means having many possibilities.
There are classic models we have known for years, new bags that arrive every season and quickly become highly desired, and then there is the whole vintage and second-hand market, where we can find discontinued models or rediscover bags from the past that have surprisingly come back into style.
So which Chanel bag should you buy?
To start, let's see what the main categories of CHANEL bags are and which differences can really influence the choice.
Three major categories of CHANEL bags
Classic Chanel bags
These are the CHANEL models we have known for years: 2.55, Classic Flap / 11.12, Boy, Coco Handle and Top Handle, Deauville and GST.

They do not all belong to the same era, and some are no longer present in current collections, but they are bags that have maintained their recognizability and their appeal over time.
If you are looking for a Classic CHANEL to buy today and continue to carry over the years, these are certainly the models to start from.
Trendy Chanel bags
Then there are the bags that represent a specific moment in fashion.
In recent years we have seen the great success of the Chanel 19 and Chanel 22. Today the focus is on models such as Chanel Hobo 25, XXL Flap, new Shopping Bags and Soft flap in suede.
Some of these bags could consistently become among the most recognizable models of the Maison. Others might remain more tied to the season in which they were created.
When we buy them, however, we still cannot know what their path will be.
An interesting example is the new suede Flaps. The shapes immediately recall the Classic Flaps that we have known for years, but the material, softness, and, in some cases, the proportions change.
Looking at them side by side, the similarity is evident.

Vintage and Chanel models to rediscover
Finally, there is the CHANEL archive.
Bags out of production or simply less present in recent years can suddenly become fashionable again when fashion proportions change.
An interesting example is the Cerf / Executive Tote. If we pair it with some new Shopping Bags, we find proportions and lines that are surprisingly familiar. It is not the same bag and it is not a reissue: simply, in fashion certain shapes come back.

CHANEL CERF / EXECUTIVE TOTE ↔ NEW SHOPPING BAG
For this, our first piece of advice is simple: don't only look at what has just arrived in boutiques. Also look back.
Sometimes a CHANEL from many years ago can appear incredibly contemporary.

Caviar, Lambskin or Suede: which leather to choose?
Even the leather completely changes the experience of using the bag.
Caviar
The term Caviar commonly refers to CHANEL's pebbled leather.
It is durable, structured, and generally easier to manage with frequent use.
If you are looking for a Classic Flap to use often, it is one of the most practical options.
Lambskin
Lambskin is smooth, soft, and very pleasant to the touch.
It is deeply linked to the image of the Classic Flap and has a particular elegance, but requires more care compared to the Caviar.
Small scratches and scuffs may be more visible.
Suede
Suede is, on the other hand, one of the main materials of the new Flap bags.
It makes the bag softer, less formal, and very contemporary, especially in natural tones.
But if you are buying only one important CHANEL to use frequently, our advice is not to choose suede just because it is particularly fashionable at the moment.
First ask yourself how you will actually use the bag.

Which Chanel size to choose?
There is no perfect Chanel size for everyone.
The choice depends on what you carry with you, how you prefer to wear the bag, and the proportions you like.
Small Chanel bags
Mini Square, Mini Rectangular, WOC, and Vanity are suitable for those who carry only the essentials or want a compact bag to use even in the evening.

The medium sizes
Small and Medium / 11.12 represent two of the most well-known proportions of the Classic Flap, along with the numerous contemporary bags of similar sizes.

In our recent experience, we have observed a particularly strong interest in the Classic Flap Small.
This does not mean that it is better than the Medium. But it shows that the Small should not be considered simply a smaller Medium or a more affordable option.
Today, moreover, the boutique price difference between Small and Medium is relatively limited.
Large Chanel bags
Jumbo, Maxi, Deauville, GST, large Shopping Bags and the XXL Flap meet completely different needs.
These are bags for those who love significant proportions, need greater capacity, or want the bag to have a much stronger presence in the look.
From the small WOC to XXL, the CHANEL universe today offers extremely different sizes.
The right size is not necessarily the most popular one. It is the one that really works for you and for what you carry in the bag.
In-depth → Guide to Chanel bag sizes: which one to choose?
A Chanel for everyday use or a special bag?
Before making a definite decision which Chanel bag to buy, ask yourself how you plan to use it.
If you are buying your first and only important CHANEL, practicality, versatility, and durability will probably have a greater impact.
For a small elegant evening bag, a Mini, a WOC, or a Small may be more suitable.
If you especially want that immediately recognizable CHANEL, capable of staying in the wardrobe for many years, it is natural to return to the Classic Flap.
Who, on the other hand, already owns one or more classic CHANEL bags You may find a Chanel 25, an XXL, or a new Flap in suede much more interesting.

The same bag can therefore be perfect for one woman and completely wrong for another.
Which Chanel bag retains its value best?
If for you the value of the bag over time is also important, not all CHANEL start from the same position.
La Classic Flap is one of the most interesting examples. It is a model that has been around for decades, immediately recognizable, and still in production today. Over the years CHANEL has repeatedly increased its price in boutiques, while on the secondary market there continues to be established demand.

This makes the purchase of a Classic Flap particularly interesting. at the right priceBy choosing the model, size, condition, and purchase price carefully, especially on the secondary market, it is possible to buy a bag to use for many years that can retain a significant part of its value.
The case is different for the the it-bag of the momentA newly released bag can be extremely hard to find and reach the secondary market at prices even higher than retail. But that markup mainly reflects the demand and scarcity of that moment: no one yet knows what its value will be in five or ten years.

For this reason, if besides wanting a CHANEL you also want to a well-thought-out purchase over time, it is worth looking first of all at models with a history, an already established demand, and a real secondary market. The Classic Flap remains one of the main references.
But how much does a Chanel bag cost?
It is one of the first questions you ask yourself before an important purchase.
How much does a Chanel Classic cost? How much does a Classic Flap cost today? And how much can the same bag cost on the secondary market?
The price depends on the model, size, material, and, in the second-hand market, also on year, condition, color, hardware, and completeness.
To guide ourselves, we start from the most well-known line.
How much does a new Chanel Classic Flap cost?
Today the boutique prices of the main sizes of the Classic line are:
| Model | Boutique price |
|---|---|
| Mini Square | €4.850 |
| Mini Rectangular | €5.050 |
| Classic Flap Small | €10.100 |
| Classic 11.12 Medium | €10.500 |
| Classic Flap Large / Jumbo | €11.300 |
| Maxi Classic | €11.900 |
The most interesting fact is not only how much a Chanel Classic Flap costs today, but the price difference between one size and another.
Among a Mini Rectangular from €5,050 and a Classic Flap Small from €10,100 There is over €5,000 difference.
However, this does not mean that there aren’t new CHANELs to buy between €5,000 and €10,000. On the contrary: it is precisely in this range that we find many Top Handle, seasonal Flap, and bags from contemporary collections.
The new ones Flap in suede, for example, start from about €5.300–€5.600 for the smaller models and reach approximately €7.600 for the Maxi.
At this point, the choice is no longer simply between one size and another of the same bag. With the same budget, we can choose between very different types of CHANEL.
And this is where the secondary market becomes particularly interesting: with a budget of €5,000–€10,000 we can consider a new CHANEL from the current collections or a Timeless Classic Flap second hand, whose new boutique price today exceeds €10,000.
And what if your budget were €5,000, €7,000, or €10,000?
With a budget between €5,000 and €10,000 you essentially have two options.
You can enter the boutique and choose one New CHANEL among the models available in your price range.
Or you can look at secondary market, where the same budget can allow you to purchase a Timeless Classic Flap With a significant saving compared to the current boutique price.
And it is right here that second-hand becomes particularly interesting: With the same budget, you can choose a Timeless Classic Flap, one of CHANEL's most recognizable models, with a long history and still in production today, saving significantly compared to the current boutique price.
How much does a used Chanel Classic Flap cost?
One Used Chanel Classic Flap can cost much less than the same model new in boutique, but there is no single price for every size.
The prices we indicate refer to bags in very good or excellent condition, that is, specimens that we would actually consider for purchase.
Naturally, Classic Flap bags can also be found on the market at much lower prices. But a significantly lower price almost always has a reason.
It may be significant wear, loss of structure, worn or retouched corners, recolored leather, restored or replaced parts, or interventions that are not immediately recognizable, especially for those buying their first Chanel.
Even well-made photographs can make some defects much less noticeable. For this reason, when the price seems particularly convenient, it is important to understand why that bag costs less.
For this reason, when we compare prices on the secondary market, we always compare bags of comparable quality and condition.
In our recent experience, a Classic Flap Small in great condition is generally around €7.000–€7.500It is a size in high demand today and tends to retain its value well on the secondary market.

One Classic Flap Medium in great condition It can be found around €6,500–€7,000, while specimens practically never used, particularly well preserved and with complete set, can reach €9,000–€9,500.
With the Jumbo something interesting happens: despite being larger and having a higher boutique price than Small and Medium, on the secondary market we can find specimens in excellent condition around €5,000–€6,900.

This shows an important peculiarity of the secondary market: a larger bag is not necessarily more expensiveToday, Small and Medium are very popular sizes and tend to retain their price better, while a Jumbo can represent a particularly interesting purchase for those who love larger bags.

Where to buy a Chanel bag?
Once the model is identified and the budget is established, another important question arises: where to buy a Chanel bag?
If you are looking for a Chanel 25, a new Flap in suede or a specific model from the current collection, the boutique is naturally the first point of reference. For especially sought-after and hard-to-find models, the secondary market can offer immediate availability, but not necessarily at a lower price.
If, instead, you are looking for a Classic Flap, a 2.55, a Deauville, a GST, or a discontinued model, it is definitely worth also comparing the secondary market.
How to choose a reliable seller
But when buying bags worth several thousand euros, the choice of the seller is as important as the choice of the bag.
In our activity, we are regularly offered bags that, after verification, we decide not to purchase because they do not pass our authenticity checks. And it happens to see offers of the same type on the market, even on large platforms, seemingly professional websites, or through online advertisements.
Being present on a large platform, on Google or on social media does not, by itself, represent a guarantee of authenticity. An advertisement, a well-made website, or thousands of followers do not replace the verification of the individual bag and the reliability of the seller.
Sometimes it is precisely the particularly interesting prices that catch attention. Some offers may seem really convincing, but when the price is very far from the real value of a comparable Chanel, it is important to understand why.
Another element to check is who actually owns the bag and where it will be shipped from.
When possible, prefer sellers who have purchased the bags directly and they physically have them in stockIn this way, the seller was able to personally see and check each item, verify its condition, and subject it to their own authenticity checks before offering it to the customer.
Consignment sales are a normal practice in the luxury market, if the bag is first received and inspected by the professional. It is different in the case when the bag never physically passes through the seller's hands and is shipped directly to the customer by a third party, perhaps from another country.
For a purchase of several thousand euros, you should know where the bag is actually located, who checked that specific item, and who will be responsible if what you receive does not match what was promised. If the shipment departs from a non-EU country, any duties, VAT, and customs procedures must also be made clear in advance.
For this reason, when you choose where to buy a used Chanel, do not just look at the price. Evaluate authenticity, condition, seller transparency, shipment origin, and above all who actually had the bag in their hands before you.
Do not check only the bag. Also check who is selling it to you.
First Chanel bag: what to check before buying?
If you are choosing your first Chanel bag on the secondary market, pay particular attention to the actual condition of the bag. Two examples of the same model, of the same size and the same year can be very different from each other.
First check the leather and the cornersLook for any scratches, scuffs, stains, color loss, and differences in shade that could indicate previous touch-ups.
Then look at the quilting: On a well-preserved bag, it should maintain good definition and appear regular. On a vintage Chanel, a flatter quilting can be perfectly normal; on a recent bag declared as lightly used, however, it deserves more attention.
Also check the structure of the bag, the flap, the interior, the chain, and the hardwarePronounced creases, loss of shape, significant scratches, or excessively worn parts affect the overall condition and therefore the item's value.
Finally, always ask if the bag has undergone restoration, retouching, or recoloring work. A professional intervention does not necessarily make a bag uninteresting, but it must be declared and taken into account in the valuation.
A well-preserved Chanel does not necessarily have to be perfect. The important thing is to know exactly what you are buying.
