How to Evaluate the Condition of a Luxury Bag Professionally

Inside the Bagotica Process.

This article is part of the Bagotica editorial series explaining how luxury bags are curated, evaluated and authenticated before entering our collection.

Bagotica Process:

Condition is often described in comfortable words.

Excellent.
Very good.
Lightly used.

Yet professionals rarely rely on adjectives alone.

They rely on standards.

At Bagotica, condition is measured against a reference point:
how close a piece remains to its original boutique state.

The reference: boutique new

Imagine a bag that has just left the store.

Protected.
Untouched.
Carrying the scent of fresh leather.

This is the ideal.
Everything else is evaluated in relation to it.

Our internal scale of preservation

While every piece is unique, we use a structured approach to maintain consistency.

10 / 10 — Boutique new

Unused.
Complete.
No interaction beyond necessary handling.

The bag retains the full presence of a retail piece.

9.5 / 10 — Essentially new

The bag may have been tried or carried once or twice, yet no visible signs appear.

Shape is firm.
Leather untouched.
Hardware immaculate.

Sometimes protective stickers are removed — as boutiques often recommend — but the condition remains indistinguishable from new.

Time may have passed, yet preservation is absolute.

9 / 10 — Exceptional pre-owned

Here, the piece has lived slightly.

Perhaps worn carefully on rare occasions.
Possibly without original purchase receipt, or with minor handling history.

However, to the eye and in the hand, it remains superb.

No fatigue.
No visual distraction.

This is pre-owned at its most elegant.

8.5 / 10 — Near-new with minimal traces

Tiny signs of life may exist.

A faint mark from hardware contact.
Light signs on protective feet.
A micro point visible only upon close inspection.

Nothing structural.
Nothing altering the character.

The overall impression remains refined.

8 / 10 — VERY GOOD

Light signs of use may be visible.

Softened corners.
Minor surface wear.
Light scratches or signs on hardware.

The structure remains intact.
The form is preserved.

The piece still presents well overall,
with only moderate signs of previous life.

Below this level

If wear becomes noticeable,
if corners soften,
if hardware distracts,

the piece no longer belongs within our selection.

It may still be authentic.
It may still be beautiful.

But it is not Bagotica.

Vintage can exceed expectations

Age does not automatically reduce rating.

Some pieces preserved for decades remain extraordinary.

When time leaves almost no trace, they can rank among our highest evaluations.

Preservation matters more than chronology.

Why clarity benefits the client

A defined scale prevents misunderstanding.

It aligns expectation with reality.

The client receives exactly what the description implies.

Condition is dignity maintained

A luxury bag carries history, but it should also carry presence.

Our role is to ensure that what remains is worthy of continuation.
